Wind-driven Springs Fire prompts widespread evacuations, warnings
The Moreno Valley fire, officially named the Springs Fire, has exploded to 3,500 acres with 5% containment, triggering mandatory evacuations near Perris and Moreno Valley.
MORENO VALLEY, Calif. - Firefighters are battling a dual threat Friday as powerful winds fuel multiple blazes across Southern California. The largest, the Springs Fire, erupted Friday afternoon and quickly spread through tinder-dry vegetation, driven by gusts reaching 50 mph.
Further north in Acton, crews are also contending with the Crown Fire, which broke out near Crown Valley Road. The blaze has forced temporary road closures and put local ranchers on high alert. The proximity of the two fires has stretched regional resources thin, with CAL FIRE and Riverside County Fire Department calling in additional air support.
As of Friday evening, the Springs Fire has scorched over 3,500 acres. "The wind is our biggest enemy right now," said a spokesperson for the fire department. "Conditions are changing by the minute, and we are urging residents to heed evacuation orders immediately."
At least one injury has been reported involving a firefighter during the initial response in Riverside. Details on the cause of the fires remain under investigation.
